Understanding Estrogen Dominance: A Hormonal Imbalance You Shouldn’t Ignore

Being overweight can lead to higher estrogen levels, contributing to estrogen dominance. However, estrogen dominance isn’t always caused by excess estrogen, it can also result from low progesterone levels. In women, this can happen due to:

*Chronic stress (since progesterone is used to produce cortisol)

*Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

*Perimenopause or menopause

*Hypothyroidism

In men, elevated estrogen levels can suppress testosterone, leading to low libido, muscle loss, and fatigue.

As you can see, hormones are interconnected, when one hormone is out of balance, it can disrupt the entire system.

What You’ll Learn in This Article

In this article,  I’ll break down estrogen dominance in both men and women—its root causes, symptoms, and the health risks associated with leaving it untreated.

If there’s one takeaway from this article, let it be this: Your body knows when something is wrong.

It constantly sends signals through symptoms, trying to alert you.

Ignoring these signs or procrastinating can allow minor imbalances to progress into chronic diseases, which then become much harder to reverse.

I’ve had clients come to me saying:

Akash, I barely eat, but I’m still overweight!”

What they don’t realize is that their hormonal and metabolic processes have been out of balance for years, sometimes even decades, due to poor lifestyle habits.

Weight gain, hormonal imbalances, and metabolic disorders don’t happen overnight; they develop slowly over time and only get diagnosed when they reach a critical stage.

That’s why early action is key.

Coming back to today’s topic, The symptoms of estrogen dominance include the following:

Symptoms of Estrogen Dominance

In Women:

✅ Irregular or heavy periods

✅ PMS symptoms (mood swings, bloating, breast tenderness)

✅ Weight gain (especially around hips and thighs)

✅ Fatigue and brain fog

✅ Fibroids or ovarian cysts

✅ Anxiety, depression, or irritability

✅ Breast lumps or fibrocystic breasts

In Men:

✅ Low libido and erectile dysfunction

✅ Gynecomastia: Fat gain; especially around the chest

✅ Loss of muscle mass and strength

✅ Fatigue and low energy

✅ Mood swings or depression

Causes of Estrogen Dominance

There are 7 main causes of estrogen dominance. There could be a few more besides what I will discuss, but these are the 7 root causes.

1. Poor gut health.

A healthy gut microbiome helps eliminate excess estrogen.

An imbalance in gut bacteria (dysbiosis) can lead to estrogen reabsorption instead of excretion, contributing to estrogen dominance.

2. Impaired Liver Detoxification

The liver is responsible for metabolizing and eliminating excess estrogen.

A sluggish liver due to poor diet, alcohol, processed foods, and environmental toxins can cause estrogen to accumulate in the body.

3. Xenoestrogens (Environmental Estrogens)

Xenoestrogens are synthetic chemicals that mimic estrogen in the body. They are found in:

*Plastics (BPA)

*Personal care products with parabens and phthalates

*Pesticides and herbicides

4. Chronic Stress & High Cortisol

When stress is prolonged, the body produces excess cortisol, which competes with progesterone.

This results in low progesterone levels, leading to estrogen dominance.

5. Low Progesterone Levels (in women)

I have already discussed this point at the start of this article . Once again, Progesterone balances estrogen.

When progesterone is low, estrogen becomes dominant.

A healthy progesterone-to-estrogen ratio is crucial for menstrual health, fertility, and mood stability.

6. Excess Body Fat

Fat cells (adipose tissue) store and produce estrogen. Being overweight can increase estrogen levels, contributing to estrogen dominance.

7. Hormonal Birth Control & Medications

Birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and some medications can increase estrogen levels while suppressing natural progesterone production.

Holistic Remedies to Reverse Estrogen Dominance

1. Support Liver Detoxification

*Eat cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, cauliflower, cabbage) to promote estrogen metabolism.

*Drink lemon water in the morning to support liver function.

*Include dandelion root tea, milk thistle, and turmeric to aid detoxification.

2. Improve Gut Health

*Eat fermented foods (kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir) to balance gut bacteria.

*Take probiotics and fiber-rich foods to promote estrogen excretion.

*Avoid antibiotics unless necessary, as they disrupt gut bacteria.

3. Reduce Xenoestrogen Exposure

*Avoid plastic containers (use glass or stainless steel instead).

*Choose organic produce to reduce pesticide exposure.

*Use natural personal care products (free from parabens and sulfates).

*Switch to hormone-free dairy and meat.

4. Manage Stress & Cortisol

*Practice yoga, meditation, or breathwork to reduce stress.

*Get quality sleep (7-9 hours per night) to regulate cortisol.

*Engage in light exercise (walking, stretching) rather than overtraining, which can spike cortisol.

5. Balance Progesterone Levels (for Women)

*Take magnesium, vitamin B6, and zinc to support progesterone.

*Use seed cycling (flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds in the first half of the cycle, sesame and sunflower seeds in the second half).

*Consider natural progesterone creams (under guidance from a practitioner).

6. Maintain a Healthy Weight

*Reduce sugar and refined carbs to prevent insulin resistance (which can worsen estrogen dominance).

*Focus on strength training and regular exercise to maintain lean muscle.

7. Support Thyroid Health

*Eat iodine-rich foods (seaweed, eggs, fish) to support thyroid function.

*Avoid excess soy products, as they may interfere with thyroid hormone production.

*Manage selenium, zinc, and vitamin D levels for optimal thyroid health.

Final Thoughts

Estrogen dominance is common but reversible with the right lifestyle changes.

By supporting liver detox, reducing environmental estrogens, managing stress, and balancing other key hormones like progesterone and testosterone, you can restore hormonal harmony naturally.
