Namaste!
Let me start with a simple question: If I asked you to point to your kidneys right now, could you do it? Most people can’t.
And that’s surprising, isn’t it?
We spend hours scrolling social media, absorbing news, entertainment, drama, and negativity… yet when it comes to learning about our own bodies the very things that keep us alive we avoid it.
So if you’re reading this, I want you to know I’m genuinely proud of you.
You’re choosing to learn something meaningful something that can improve your physical, emotional, and even spiritual well-being.
In this article (and the next one), I’ll share important information about your kidneys and urinary system how they work, how they’re affected by stress and lifestyle, and how to keep them strong for life.
The information builds gradually, so take your time and absorb it.

Why Kidneys Matter
When we think of organs, the heart, liver, and lungs usually get all the attention but the kidneys?
Most people only pay attention when something has already gone wrong.
Yet these two small organs quietly filter around 190 liters of blood every single day.
They remove:
- Wastes
- Toxins
- Excess water
all silently, in the background.
My approach isn’t about quick fixes. I don’t want to just tell you to drink some magical tea and call it a day. I want you to understand the deeper connection between your thoughts, emotions, and your physical body.
To explain this clearly, I often use a system I created called the Elemental Organ-Balance (EOB) Framework.
Today’s Focus: The Water Element
Today, we’re focusing on the Water element, which includes:
- The kidneys (yin)
- The urinary bladder (yang)
Here’s where it gets interesting: the Water element is connected with the core emotion of fear not fear of a specific situation, but fear of life itself.
Signs of Weak Water Energy
- Timid
- Anxious
- Always tense
- Or always worried
These are signs of weak Water energy.
People who trust life, surrender to change, and believe that challenges are impermanent tend to have stronger Water energy.
This idea that emotions affect organs isn’t just philosophy.
It’s a foundational concept in holistic healing, especially in traditions like Ayurveda and TCM.
The Kidney–Adrenal Link
Look at the gland associated with the Water element: the adrenals.
Even in systems like the chakra model, the kidneys and adrenals align with the Muladhara (Root) Chakra.
The adrenals sit on top of your kidneys literally partners.
The kidneys handle purification and balance, while the adrenals manage stress and survival.
When you push too hard, endure chronic stress, or don’t rest enough, the adrenals burn out, kidney energy weakens, and the Water element collapses.
Now that the foundation is clear, let me share the four holistic remedies you can start today.
Holistic Remedies to Reverse Kidney Damage
1: Hydration
Hydration is the first and most essential step.
Your kidneys are filters, and filters only work when there’s enough fluid moving through them.
Start your morning with water around 250 ml, sipped slowly.
Warm water is especially good. Lemon or honey is optional; what matters is starting the day with hydration.
Then drink water steadily throughout the day not too much at once, and not too little.
A simple guideline is roughly 1 liter for every 20 kg of body weight, but always listen to your body.
Your urine color tells the truth:
- Pale yellow is ideal.
-
Dark yellow suggests dehydration.
-
Colorless urine can indicate low B-vitamin levels.
Hydration isn’t just about drinking more it’s about drinking the right amount.
2: Specific Nutrients & Herbs
If you want to strengthen your Water element, focus on nutrient-dense foods rich in:
-
Vitamin C
-
Vitamin D
-
Vitamin K2
-
Magnesium
-
Zinc
-
Omega-3s
-
B-vitamins
Herbs and adaptogens can also be powerful allies:
-
Ashwagandha (KSM-66): supports the kidneys and urinary system.
-
Ginseng (Korean or Siberian): excellent for resilience and energy.
-
Cordyceps: supports respiratory and metabolic health.
I personally use mushroom coffee (Four Sigmatic brand) it gives me energy while supporting a balanced stress response.
A quick note on protein:
Some studies say high-protein diets don’t harm kidneys, but we should be cautious.
There’s no strong benefit to exceeding about 1.6 g of protein per kg of body weight for muscle building.
If you weigh 70 kg, that’s about 110 g of protein.
Beyond that, you’re just adding burden without meaningful payoff.
3: Stress and the Kidney–Adrenal Connection
This third remedy is critical: stress management.
Kidneys and adrenals are inseparable.
Chronic stress overworks your adrenals, depletes kidney energy, and drains resilience.
If you’re anxious, an overthinker, or always pushing harder — forcing things won’t help.
As Sadhguru says: only a genius knows how much to work.
Focus your energy so that you accomplish more in less time — then use the extra time for real rest.
And by rest, I don’t mean scrolling Instagram or binge-watching Netflix.
Those drain you more.
Instead:
-
Spend time in nature.
-
Practice meditation.
-
Try Yoga Nidra or mantra sadhana.
-
Prioritize deep, conscious rest.
Stress depletes the kidneys. Recovery restores them. Remember that.
4: Monitor Biomarkers — Early Warnings Save Lives
Finally, keep an eye on your biomarkers. Blood tests are easy to get and extremely informative.
Important kidney-related biomarkers include:
-
Creatinine
-
BUN
-
eGFR
-
Electrolyte balance
-
Uric acid
These tell you how well your kidneys are functioning before symptoms appear.
In next week’s article, I’ll share how to interpret and correct these numbers if they’re off.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why are kidneys important for overall health?
Kidneys filter toxins, regulate fluid balance, support blood pressure, and help maintain internal stability, making them essential for long-term health and energy.
2. How does stress affect kidney function?
Chronic stress overworks the adrenal glands, which sit above the kidneys. This can weaken kidney energy, reduce resilience, and disturb hormonal balance.
3. What are signs of weak kidney or Water element energy?
Common signs include anxiety, fatigue, constant worry, lower back discomfort, poor stress tolerance, and feeling emotionally overwhelmed.
4. How much water should I drink for kidney health?
A simple guideline is around one liter of water for every 20 kilograms of body weight while also observing urine color and thirst signals.
5. Which nutrients support kidney health naturally?
Key nutrients include magnesium, zinc, vitamin C, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, B-vitamins, and adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha and ginseng.
6. Which blood tests help monitor kidney function?
Important biomarkers include creatinine, BUN, eGFR, uric acid, and electrolyte levels, which help detect kidney stress before symptoms appear.
