If you had asked me 10 years ago what it takes to get fit and healthy, my answer would have been something like this:
‘Eat double your bodyweight in protein and lift weights 4 to 5 times a week, and you’ll be lean and healthy.’ But today, I beg to differ.
In my early years with Fabulous Body, my focus was on leanness, aesthetics, and physical performance.
But over time, life had other plans. Facing health challenges and difficult circumstances, holistic health wisdom slowly found its way into my path.
Yes, nutrition and movement are essential, but over time I realized they’re just a small piece of the puzzle.
The truth is that there are 11 core pillars of health that form a complete framework for achieving optimal health what I call the Green Zone. If you desire near-perfect health, check out my video where I discuss all zones in detail.
If you’re content staying in the ‘orange’ or ‘purple’ zones (both sub-standard for true health), then by all means keep obsessing over counting calories, protein macros, and progressive overload.
But if your goal is near-perfect health and reaching the Green Zone, you need to look beyond the gym and the plate.
Ancient healing sciences like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine have guided human health for thousands of years, emphasizing holistic healing and harmony with nature.
In contrast, gym culture and processed foods (protein powders, etc.) are relatively new and represent just a fraction of the bigger health picture.
That’s why I created a free resource called the 11 Core Pillars of Health Guide. Click the name of the guide to download it.
It covers the full spectrum of what truly drives long-term health and vitality beyond just nutrition and exercise.

Sunlight & Nature
Today, we’ll focus on one of the most overlooked pillars especially for city-dwellers.
Backed by research, I’ll explain why this pillar is absolutely essential for your energy, hormones, sleep, and long-term health: sunlight and nature. 1
Why Sunlight Matters
In recent years, ‘soaking in the sun’ became popular as a way to optimize vitamin D3 levels. 2
But sunlight is much more than that it’s a biological necessity hard-wired into our evolution. 3
Yes, UVB rays help your skin produce vitamin D (vital for bone strength, immunity, and overall health).
But that’s only the beginning.
The entire spectrum of sunlight UVA, visible light, infrared plays critical roles in regulating your brain, body, and hormones. 4
For example:
- Morning sunlight entering your eyes and hitting your skin sends a signal to your master clock in the brain, saying ‘It’s daytime; be alert.’ 5
- This early light primes metabolism, immune function, and the nighttime melatonin cycle for deep sleep. 6
- Infrared light (which you feel as warmth) penetrates deep, improving circulation, reducing inflammation, and aiding tissue repair. 7
- Visible blue light in the morning boosts alertness and mood. 8
- UVA contributes to nitric-oxide release, which supports vascular health.
In other words: the sun’s rays are an orchestra health happens when you listen to the whole symphony, not just one instrument.
Of course, sunlight has its double-edge side.
Too much UV exposure (especially mid-day without protection) can cause DNA damage, sunburn, and higher skin-cancer risk. 9
And conversely, too little exposure (as happens when you work indoors all day or are glued to screens) leads to deficiencies not just vitamin D, but circadian misalignment. 10
So balance is the key.
Do’s & Don’ts of Nature
Don’ts:
- Don’t avoid the sun completely.
- Don’t rely on artificial lighting to replace natural light especially late at night.
- Don’t stay indoors, screen-bound, expecting to sleep well or be healthy.
Do’s:
- Expose yourself to natural sunlight within the first hour of your day. 15-30 minutes of morning (and afternoon) sun makes a measurable difference in energy, mood, and natural sleep onset. 11
- Take breaks outside during the workday. Even short time in nature boosts health across ages. 12
- Respect the sun’s rhythm: soft sun (sunrise/sunset) helps reset your biological clock; midday sun (in moderation) helps vitamin D production. 13
- View sunlight and nature not as luxury or threat, but as essential nourishment, as vital as the food you eat or the water you drink. 14
Nature Beyond Sunlight
Sunlight is just one part of the story. Humans weren’t designed to live in sealed boxes of concrete, air-conditioning, WiFi routers.
We were designed to live in nature, and our biology still remembers that.
- Grounding (earthing), placing your bare feet on soil, grass, or sand: simple but powerful research shows it reduces inflammation, calms the nervous system, and improves sleep. 15
- Fresh, natural air, unlike recycled indoor air, is rich in negative ions and phytoncides (aromatic compounds from trees) which boost immunity, reduce stress, and improve brain clarity. 16
- Studies show children with more access to green space had significantly lower risk of psychiatric disorders later in life. 17
- Time near water (‘blue mind’) lowers cortisol, boosts mood, and improves connectedness. 18
When you combine sunlight, fresh air, grounding, and natural surroundings you’re syncing your biology back to its original setting. 19
The body doesn’t just relax it remembers. It remembers how to sleep, how to breathe, how to repair, and how to thrive.
Final Thoughts
If you spend most of your waking hours indoors, behind screens, under artificial light and in climate-controlled rooms, you’re missing a large part of what it means to be truly healthy.
You might workout, you might eat well but you’ll still be moving through life in a way your body wasn’t designed for.
Carving out 20–30 minutes every day to step outside, breathe deeply, soak in sunlight, or wander barefoot in natural surroundings is not optional it’s essential if you want to reach the Green Zone of health.
