Q) Hey Akash, what are the best beginner gym exercises that I can start off with? I just joined a gym, and my trainer recommends starting with machines as it’s safe. What do you think?

 

A) Rohan, thanks for your question. 🙂

 

I strongly feel that it’s very important to build the right mindset at the very beginning of one’s weight training journey. Weight training is tough, not easy.

 

Great physiques are forged with compound movements like squats and deadlifts, clean and presses and overhead and bench presses and not shoulder lateral raise machines or cable crossovers!!

 

Once the perception is formed that compound movements are tough and risky, it’s really difficult to incorporate these movements in the long term in your workout routine.

 

Agreed squats/deadlifts and other compound movements may seem intimidating at first. Also, the learning curve is steep when compared with the comfort of doing leg presses or leg extensions, but let me say this:

Sooner you accept the fact that you cannot build a #fabbody without compound exercises using dumbbells and barbells comprising 70-80% of your workouts, then my friend, you should pick up a sport or join a group class. It’s fun and enjoyable, and you can still lose weight.

 

Weight training is the safest sport in the world, and it’s not rocket science. Learn the movement, practice it, and soon you realize that without doing compound movements in any workout session, it will feel incomplete.
